Old Frame 2023 World Championship

The most thrilling and epic showdown in the community of MTG Old Frame took place in the vibrant city of Valencia, Spain, were 20 talented players participated in the 2023 Old Frame World Championship.

This prestigious event brought together a mix of both MTG Old Frame live event regulars, like David Aparicio, winner of the first season of the Liga Madrileña Old Frame, or Alfonso Utrilla, a regular of the same league and winner of the first-ever Old Frame Vintage tournament in the capital of Spain; seasoned veterans that were killing the Vintage format already back in 2003, like Juan Espadas, Félix Campo and Raúl Talavera; and Premodern experts like the two times Spanish national champion and second-place European championship Pablo Suárez.

Even Vedast Sanxis, the perpetrator of the format and organiser of this tournament and Resti González, the renowned streamer from Twitch’s Old School MTG Channel (which also broadcast live the whole tournament), showcased their skills on the battlefield.

An Impressive Deck Diversity

Deck diversity was off the charts, with an array of powerful strategies and archetypes taking the stage. Whether you compared the Old Frame World Championship with previous live events or with our regular MTG Old Frame League Online, it was obvious that this tournament brought a kaleidoscope of play styles and unleashed an unprecedented level of excitement in the players.

Old Frame World Championship Format

In an effort to minimise luck and highlight skill, the tournament organisers decided to go above and beyond. This was the most important Old Frame Vintage event of the year, and the thought was that the participants would get more opportunities to showcase their abilities.

They opted for six thrilling Swiss rounds instead of the usual five that 20-player tournaments have, ensuring that players with up to two losses would still have a chance to advance.

The innovative twist continued as the player who finished first in the Swiss stage secured a valuable bye in the quarter-finals, adding a strategic element to the mix. This bold move successfully eliminated intentional draws, making every match an intense and memorable battle.

Old Frame World Championship Swiss Standings

After the grueling six Swiss rounds, the standings were set, and Elías Úbeda emerged as the top contender, securing a direct path to the semifinals.

The quarterfinals showcased some jaw-dropping matchups, with Félix Campo‘s Tools and Tubbies facing off against Javier Sánchez‘s WUB Stiflenought, Pablo Cubedo‘s Hulk Smash squaring off against Óscar Canedo‘s Stax, and Roberto Martínez‘s Stax facing Juan Espadas‘s Threshold.

The tension was palpable as Javier, Óscar and Juan triumphed, advancing to the next stage of the tournament.

The semifinals witnessed heart-stopping clashes between Elías Úbeda‘s Drain Storm and Óscar Canedo‘s Stax, as well as a battle of wits between Javier Sánchez‘s WUB Stiflenought and Juan Espadas‘s Threshold. In the end, Elías and Javier emerged victorious, paving the way for a thrilling finals matchup.

The finals showcased an intense showdown between Elías Úbeda‘s formidable Drain Storm deck and Javier Sánchez‘s crafty WUB Stiflenought. Javier displayed incredible skill and determination, claiming victory in both games of the final match, and etching his name in the annals of history as the well-deserved 2023 Old Frame Vintage World Champion!
